Voluntary Programs in Mexico (1997)

IIEC supported the efforts of the National Commission for Energy Savings (CONAE) in establishing a nationwide energy efficiency voluntary partnership program.

In February 1997, CONAE held a Voluntary Program scoping meeting to kick off the decision-making process towards an energy efficiency program aimed at the industrial sector. Voluntary Programs offered a lower cost alternative to governmental regulation and a way to strengthen public-private links. The sponsoring agency, CONAE, provided training and analytical tools to help companies identify and implement energy efficiency measures. The participating firms agreed to invest in those measures that could have a high economic rate of return. The partner companies also received public recognition for their actions.
