In
1989, IIEC opened an office in Bangkok to promote and facilitate the implementation
of energy-efficiency in Asia. IIEC-Asia works in three broad areas: end-use energy
efficiency, demand-side management (DSM), transportation, and renewable energy.
IIEC-Asia also has project offices in Mumbai (Bombay) and Delhi, India; and Manila,
the Philippines.
As a model country effort for
IIEC, Thailand has served as the test ground for several innovative programs ranging
from utility-sponsored demand-side management (DSM) to energy-efficiency joint
ventures, and government initiatives to international development bank programs.
IIEC’s model country programs signify a long-term commitment to work for the implementation
of energy efficiency in key countries with the goal of establishing models for
other countries to emulate. The IIEC-Asia staff work closely with the respective
governments, the electric utilities, the private sector, and nongovernmental organizations
to develop and implement energy-efficiency initiatives with substantial environmental
and economic benefits.
