IIEC’s Qualifications

IIEC has developed several Internet-based information systems to serve as technical resources for stakeholders in the energy industry. Some of IIEC’s experiences are highlighted as follows:

  • Design, develop and manage an internet-based information clearinghouse for solar thermal applications in Thailand. (www.soltherm-thailand.net)
  • Design, develop and manage an Internet-based information for the Energy Policy Research project in Thailand. (www.thaienergy.org)
  • Design, develop and manage an Internet-based structure learning facility (www.efficientlighting.net) for the Efficiency Lighting Initiative program (ELI). This Internet-based facility aims at providing information for lighting manufacturers, electric utilities, the public sector, NGOs, and educational institutions to accelerate the growth of lighting markets in its seven target countries.
  • Design, develop and manage an Internet-based information clearinghouse for energy standard and labeling community worldwide. (www.CLASPonline.org)
  • Design, develop and manage an Internet-based information for the Eco-Housing Mainstreaming Partnership project in India. (www.ecohousingindia.org)
  • Design, develop and manage an Internet-based information for the Energy Conservation and Commercialization II (ECOII) project in India. (www.eco11.org)
  • Design, develop and manage an Internet-based energy standard information system for APEC member economies. (www.APEC-ESIS.org)

IIEC Virtual Tradeshow

While the internet is still not an important marketing/promotion tool in the energy industry, a highly visible and dynamic presence in this space will still be an important part of the value equation for the energy industry. IIEC has created the Virtual Trade Show (VTS) for products, services and technologies in energy efficiency and renewable energy field and it could be a significant addition to the web presence of supplies for the energy industry.

What is the VTS?

The Virtual Tradeshow (VTS) is a web-based tradeshow that integrates features of web-based libraries and typical exhibitions/tradeshows. While traditional web-based tradeshows and exhibitions aim at replicating a data directory service counter of actual tradeshows, such as supplier lists with contact details, product lists and promotional materials including presentations, the IIEC VTS bundles the typical information with its related technical information and case studies from our web-based libraries. In addition, the IIEC VTS also offers a communication pipeline between each single visitor and suppliers through a “personal web-board”. The personal web-board allows each visitor communicating with multiple suppliers.

Knowledge Store

One of the salient features of the VTS is the VTS “knowledge store”. In the knowledge store, each product, service, application and manufacturing industry will be dynamically linked to each other and related technical documents and case studies. The knowledge store offers a cross-cutting function that enables VTS visitors expanding their searches to other products or service within the same industry or across several industries. The cross-cutting function allows visitors in getting information on what they might do to reduce energy consumption in their facilities, what products and technologies they might focus on as they develop the project concept, and how well they might expect those products and technologies to work in their environment.

Experience Non-Hierarchical VTS Database

Unlike most retrieval-based web resources that provide information sequentially on specific subjects and preexisting issues, the VTS takes an open-ended, non-sequential, and broad-based approach to providing information.Visitors do not have to visit the website with a preconceived question, or seeking specific information; with the VTS format, they can browse broad subjects of interest, and then narrow it down to a specific application or product associated with that subject.

Visitors can look at case studies of similar industries or processes, and find out how these apply to their application. They can read about other ways of achieving the same results or research technical support resources available and local vendor information. This flexibility in usage, as well as current, state-of-the-art information, are crucial to making the energy efficiency concept valuable to users of all levels, attracting new users, and retaining their interest.

VTS in Sustainable Energy Development

Participation from the private sector has been recognized as one of the important instruments to sustain any new energy initiative being promoted for the sustainable energy development. Traditionally, participation from the private sector was stimulated by market interventions from governments, international agencies and other authorities, but in many cases, participation rate declined after intervention periods were over. One of the reasons is lack of a market place that suppliers can educate and promote their products and technologies in a cost effective manner and they usually rely on their sales persons to keep momentum of those new energy initiatives.

The IIEC VTS has been designed and developed to suit the complex decision making process of industrial technology goods. Using the VTS, the users can access information in multiple ways. For example, one can start by looking at products for a certain application, e.g.lighting, and then select a link to see all the manufacturers who produce such products, read the technical specifications and case studies, and look up the retailers offering the product in a certain geographical area. Users can also log into the web site to access the forums and/or the VTS library for getting more specific technical references and case studies, and then find out suppliers that meet the technical requirement. IIEC provides three levels of access to the marketplace through the VTS. At the initial, free service is provided for downloading information from the market about products, news items, etc. At the second subscription level, access is provided for the user to interact with the marketplace directly to roam around the tradeshow. Finally, at the third subscription level, the user can request the IIEC staff to provide customized services, such as market information on energy efficient products and services, including research and case studies.
